Economics of Football

Football has been at the forefront of the entertainment sector for the last 50 years. Masses of people gather around to watch their favorite team play. Not only do they fill the stadia, but also they use televisions or their phones to follow their teams’ performance on the pitch.

Because it has been so popular all over the world, football generates an insane amount of income for the clubs. Tickets, sponsorships, and advertisements bring in cash to the clubs. With such a steady source of income, clubs invest in bigger stadiums, which in turn lead to more income through sales of more tickets than before. Clubs also buy young talents who have the potential to grow into robust players, who could be sold to richer clubs for a considerable profit. This is the business cycle that we see surrounding the triangle formed by clubs, players, and fans.

Yet, football cannot always be profitable as one would expect. Ill-decisions given by clubs as to the transfer policies might be a step backwards. Make too many of such transfers and you will end up with an income loss. If clubs do not behave professionally in managing the team, they might also lose their competitiveness in the sports arena, which might deprive them of a valuable fan base. Without a reliable fan base, the club will not be able to sell tickets or merchandise, which poses as another loss-incurring reality.

Clubs getting poorer in such a fashion experience a downward spiral that can see the team off, making them struggle for years in lower leagues.

No matter how dependent on money football is nowadays, it still is beautiful.

Sevilla FC - A Team Destined to Win

 

Sevilla F.C. is a football club from the historic Andolucian area of Spain. Older generations might remember their name as one of the few clubs at which the legendary football player Diego Maradona played during the 1990s. Although they have not had much success in their national league (La Liga), it is their international performance that has made them famous. They have won the UEFA Europa League Cup a whopping seven times in the last 20 years, the last being the 2022–2023 season. They have been reigning supreme in this competition, having won the most trophies among all the clubs involved.

Sevilla’s success lies in their ability to build up a capable team, even though the finances are not always right for them. They sell their best players for a profit, yet the player they buy instead still proves to be as good as those leaving. Thanks to their scouting crew, the new transfers shine through the new season, bringing them both success and the income that is necessary to keep going in the industry. Added to that is the fan base, which never fails to support their team in any situation.

Furthermore, Sevilla has always come up with key players that uphold the team individually, not leaving the team until they bring success. Ivan Rakitic, Frederic Kanoute, Jesus Navas, and Ever Banega all played at Sevilla long enough to win one or two trophies before moving out.

Sevilla, the king of the Europa League, owes its success to good management practices at the club level. The perfect combination of seasoned players and young rookies brings about cohesion that is destined to win cups.

Football Is Never Just a Game.

 

Football is never just a game. There is more to it. The fans, the finances, and even the politics are involved in football more than ever. There is so much pressure on clubs and players that failing is not an option. No one would want to take responsibility for failure. It seems the spirit of the game has been lost to the point that no one cares for the beauty of the game anymore. Money stands at the epicenter of football.

When I sit and watch some of the older World Cup footage from the 1980s and 1990s, I cannot hide my excitement. It is such a thrill to watch Pele, Maradona, and the like. The way they play football is simple and artistic at the same time. They enjoy the moment and want the supporters to enjoy what they see on the pitch. All you see in their eyes is passion, not greed.

Today, football is mostly surrounded by money and wealth. Weathy men buy out the clubs that have been around since football was invented. They cash out huge sums to purchase big names. If the club fails, they go out and spend more money in the transfer market. This way, clubs with passion and history have zero chance against the clubs owned by the rich.

This kind of behavior kills the joy as well as the future of football. Clubs do not want to spend on young talents who cannot immediately bring about success. They want success, and they want it now.

Football should return to its roots. Passion should win against greed.
